Zoo animals make excellent subjects for photography while traveling. In a previous article I wrote about my reasons for visiting Izmir Zoo and Wildlife Park and considered whether animals should be kept in zoos.
When I arrived at Izmir, I quickly realized the park was ideal for honing photographic skills. The varied animals and open landscapes provided many opportunities to practice composition, lighting and timing. In this piece I share some of the photos I captured and offer practical tips for anyone planning a visit.

Animals at Izmir Zoo on the Aegean Coast of Turkey

Izmir Zoo and Wildlife Park is home to more than 1,200 animals including mammals, birds, reptiles and several endangered species such as the Asian elephant. Observing these animals as they moved through their day was inspiring, and they proved to be compelling photographic subjects. During my visit I shot over 300 photos; many were discarded, but some surprised me with strong composition or a decisive moment captured.

On arrival you receive a detailed map, then you can start exploring. The park hosts a wide variety of species, including:
- Birds of prey and birds native to African forests
- Giraffes, zebras, hippopotamuses and ostriches
- Camels, red deer, gazelles and elephants
- Bears, wolves, hyenas, monkeys, tigers and lions
- A tropical centre featuring crocodiles, insects and snakes
The enclosures at Izmir Wildlife Park are generous in size, which is positive for animal welfare but can be challenging for photographers. Animals often gather in shaded areas during the heat of the day, and I found my standard zoom lens sometimes fell short. If your goal is wildlife photography at this park, bring a telephoto lens with good reach.

I also encountered several experienced photographers with long prime and zoom lenses and a variety of accessories. Their setups made my compact Fuji camera feel modest, but watching them work was an excellent learning opportunity. Observing how they anticipated animal behavior and positioned themselves improved my own approach.

How to get to Izmir Zoo
From Izmir central bus station, take a bus to Karşıyaka and then board the 777 bus to Sasalı. For larger groups, a taxi from the bus station can reduce travel time. Visitors staying at coastal resorts around Izmir can also ask local tour operators about organized transfers or private tours to the park.

The park offers diverse photographic opportunities for amateurs and enthusiasts alike: large mammals, small mammals, birds, reptiles and themed enclosures. If you visit, arrive early to take advantage of cooler light and more active animals, carry a long lens for distant subjects, and be patient—great shots often come from waiting for the right moment.
