Across Turkey there are many former Greek villages, some now inhabited by Turkish residents and others left empty, like the well-known ghost village of Kayakoy on the Mediterranean coast. These changes followed the population exchange agreement between Greece and Turkey at the end of the Turkish War of Independence, which required Greeks to return to Greece and Turks to move to Turkey. One lesser-known example on the Aegean coast is the old Greek village of Old Doğanbey.
Old Doğanbey
During our visit the weather was poor, so we only explored Old Doğanbey briefly before stopping at a small local museum. The museum’s exhibits were largely taxidermied birds and mammals. It was reassuring to read a notice explaining that all the animals had lived in the park and had died of natural causes or accidents.

In summer, the nearby Dilek National Park is ideal for wildlife watching. Walks through the park can reveal wild boar, jackals, and owls. Along the coast and on small offshore islets you may also spot seals and pink flamingos. The mix of coastal scenery and inland trails makes the area attractive to nature lovers and photographers.
A full day can easily be spent exploring Old Doğanbey and Dilek National Park. Despite its scenic appeal, the area is still little known and receives far fewer visitors than it deserves, so it remains peaceful and uncrowded.
The destination suits families and couples who enjoy countryside walks and light trekking. There are few organized day trips from local travel agents, so the easiest option is to hire a car for the day. Pack a picnic to enjoy in the park, though you will also find cafés scattered through Dilek National Park. Nearby New Doğanbey is renowned for its fish restaurants, making it a pleasant place to end a day of exploring.

Whether you are interested in history, wildlife, or a tranquil day by the sea, Old Doğanbey and Dilek National Park offer a pleasant, low-key alternative to more crowded tourist spots. Take time to wander the village lanes, enjoy the coastal views, and sample local seafood in New Doğanbey for a well-rounded day trip in this quiet corner of the Aegean coast.
