One town I was keen to visit while in Cappadocia was Nevsehir. As the main hub for the surrounding villages, it felt like the centre of the region. We jumped in the car and arrived in a busy town within an hour.
We hadn’t planned much before leaving — we assumed there would be signs or people we could ask. After driving around for twenty minutes, it seemed the town offered little beyond shops and parks. Then we spotted a sign for Nevsehir Castle and changed our minds.
The Castle of Nevsehir
The road up to Nevsehir Castle is very steep, so I would not recommend walking. Driving felt precarious at times; the slope was sharp enough that I worried we might roll back. Thankfully our driver handled it without issue.

From the top, the views are excellent — a full 360-degree panorama over Nevsehir. The castle itself does not house exhibits or on-site guides; for artifacts and historical context, visit the Nevsehir Museum in town. The museum spans two floors and displays artifacts from the surrounding area dating back many centuries.

After touring the museum we spoke with a guard to learn what else the town offers. Apart from the castle, the museum, and shopping, there isn’t much more to see in Nevsehir. My advice is therefore to choose your base elsewhere when visiting Cappadocia.
Consider booking accommodation in nearby towns like Urgup or Goreme instead. Both put you within easy reach of Cappadocia’s main sights while offering more tourist facilities and lodging options.
That said, Nevsehir is worth a daytime visit. Even if historic sites aren’t your priority, the shopping scene includes familiar brand stores that can occupy a few hours. Regular buses also connect Nevsehir with other parts of the Cappadocia region, making a day trip straightforward.

Readers’ question: Not many visitors include Nevsehir on their Cappadocia itinerary. Have you been? If so, what did you think?
