Istanbul to Ankara by Plane
Flying is the quickest way to travel between Istanbul and Ankara and is ideal if you have limited time. Flight duration is typically about one hour, sometimes less depending on conditions.
Both Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) operate direct flights to Ankara Esenboğa Airport (ESB). Because these cities are major hubs, you’ll find multiple daily flights—often more than 20—giving you flexible departure times throughout the day.
The main carriers on this route are Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, and AJet (formerly AnadoluJet). Turkish Airlines operates many services from IST, while Pegasus and AJet operate numerous flights from SAW, which can be more convenient if you are on Istanbul’s Asian side.
Ticket prices vary by season, how far in advance you book, and the time of day. Typical one-way fares often fall in the mid-range for domestic flights; booking early usually gives the best rates.
After booking, plan how to reach your departure airport. From IST you can use the HavaIST buses, the metro, or a private transfer. From SAW there are multiple bus and shuttle options from central neighborhoods; choose what’s most convenient for your location and schedule.
If you’re flying out of Istanbul Airport (IST)
Options to reach IST include HavaIST buses (from Taksim, Kadıköy, Aksaray), the metro, taxis, or private transfers. For groups or travelers with luggage, an arranged transfer or pre-booked taxi offers convenience and fewer surprises.
If you’re flying out of Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW)
SAW is well connected by shuttle buses, public buses, and private transfers from central neighborhoods. If you’re staying on the Asian side of Istanbul, SAW is often the quicker option for airport access.
After arriving at Ankara Esenboğa Airport (ESB)
Esenboğa Airport sits about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Ankara’s city center. You can reach the center by public bus (such as route 442), taxi, or a pre-booked private transfer. Travel time is typically around an hour by bus or shorter by car depending on traffic.

Istanbul to Ankara by High-Speed Train
The high-speed train (YHT) offers a comfortable, scenic alternative to flying. Trains travel up to 250 km/h (about 155 mph) and reduce travel time to roughly 4.5 hours between Istanbul and Ankara.
YHT services depart from three stations on Istanbul’s Asian side: Söğütlüçeşme, Bostancı, and Pendik. Söğütlüçeşme is closest to tourist areas and convenient if you’re staying near Kadıköy. Trains arrive at Ankara Garı, which is centrally located and offers easy connections to Kızılay and other central neighborhoods by metro or taxi.
There are around 10–15 daily high-speed departures depending on the season. Classes include Economy and Business; Business class provides more space and an included snack. There is also a slower overnight service that can be a budget-friendly choice if you prefer to travel overnight and save a night’s accommodation.
You can book tickets on the official Turkish Railways website.

Istanbul to Ankara by Car
Driving gives flexibility and the chance to explore along the way. The direct drive takes about 5 to 6 hours under normal conditions, mostly across flat plains. If you prefer scenic detours or plan multi-city stops (for example visiting the Black Sea region or Cappadocia afterward), a car is a sensible choice.
Türkiye has good highways and service stations, but Istanbul traffic can be heavy. If you rent a car, consider picking it up outside the city center or at SAW to avoid prolonged drives through congested areas. Remember that returning the vehicle to a different location may incur an additional fee.

Istanbul to Ankara by Bus
Intercity buses are a budget-friendly and reliable option. There are more than 50 daily direct departures connecting Istanbul and Ankara, with services leaving from major terminals such as Esenler and Alibeyköy on the European side and Dudullu on the Asian side.
Buses arrive at Ankara Bus Station, which is reasonably close to the city center and well connected by metro and taxis. Journey times range from about 5 to 7.5+ hours depending on traffic, the number of stops, and the departure terminal.

Have More Time? Do This Instead!
If your schedule allows, consider a multi-day route that breaks the journey into interesting stops: Istanbul → Bursa → Eskişehir → Ankara. This lets you experience different regions, historic sites, and local flavors at a relaxed pace.
Bursa is known for its Ottoman heritage and Mount Uludağ. From there you can continue to Eskişehir, a lively university city with a pleasant riverside, museums, and an attractive old quarter. Both cities make pleasant one- or two-night stops before you reach Ankara.
