Essential Travel Apps for Turkey

Airalo
Airalo provides eSIM packages that let you stay connected without buying a physical SIM. Download the app, pick a package and install the eSIM before arriving in Turkey (you need Wi-Fi to install). Airalo is often cheaper and more convenient than airport SIM counters. Packages vary in size and price, so choose what fits your needs.

Booking.com
Booking.com lists thousands of accommodations across Turkey, from hotels to apartments and hostels. Many listings offer flexible cancellation and perks for members. Note that booking from within Turkey may require a VPN to access some deals.

Kiwi
For domestic flights in Turkey, Kiwi is a reliable OTA (online travel agency) alternative to booking directly with airlines. It often handles payment issues with foreign cards better than some local carriers and can offer competitive baggage and routing options.
Transportation Apps in Turkey

Google Maps
Google Maps is essential for navigation in Turkey. It shows routes, transit options, opening hours, reviews, and elevation—which is useful in hilly cities like Istanbul. Download offline maps before your trip to conserve data and ensure navigation without an internet connection.

CityMapper + Moovit
CityMapper excels in Istanbul with detailed step-by-step transit directions, live notifications, and route filters (Walk Less, Simple, Price). Moovit covers public transport across all of Turkey and is useful for smaller towns and niche routes that other apps might miss.
Maps.me
Maps.me offers robust offline maps, points of interest, and route planning. Download regional maps in advance to use directions and discover hiking trails without mobile data.

Şehir Hatları
Şehir Hatları is Istanbul’s official ferry app. It’s simple and effective: enter departure and arrival points and the app lists routes, departure and arrival times, and ferry names—handy when planning Bosphorus crossings and commuting by sea.
Martı
Martı lets you rent electric scooters for short trips across the city. Register with your phone number, verify your identity, and follow local traffic rules. Scooters are a fun, fast way to reach waterfronts, cafes, and nearby neighborhoods.
BiTaksi
BiTaksi is the go-to taxi app in Turkey. Similar to ride-hailing apps, it lets you choose vehicle types, see estimated fares, and pay through multiple methods. Using BiTaksi reduces the risk of taxi scams and gives price transparency before you ride.
Communication Apps

Google Translate
Google Translate is indispensable for travelers. It translates text, images, and speech instantly. Conversation mode enables two-way spoken translation, which is extremely helpful when ordering food, asking for directions, or bargaining at markets.

WhatsApp is the primary messaging app in Turkey. Locals use it for everything from arranging deliveries and hair appointments to building maintenance announcements. It’s the quickest way to contact drivers, hosts, restaurants, and local services.
Sesli Sozluk
Sesli Sozluk (Dictionary With Sound) helps with translations and pronunciation. It contains millions of Turkish words translated into several languages and includes audio pronunciations—useful for learning basic phrases and checking how words sound.
Useful Local Apps

Trendyol Go + Yemeksepeti + Getir
For food and grocery delivery, these three apps cover most cities. Trendyol Go often offers flash deals and in-app payment. Yemeksepeti is popular for restaurant deliveries, and Getir serves groceries and quick essentials. Note: some apps may require a local phone number or may not accept international cards—choose cash on delivery if needed and add your WhatsApp number in order notes for easier coordination.

KarDes
KarDes is a free, locally developed guide app with self-guided tours and over 1,000 points of interest in cities like Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. Use the Discover tab for short histories or follow full audio tours that show duration, distance, and route—great for exploring neighborhoods and learning local stories.

MuzeKart
MuzeKart, developed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, helps you buy MuseumPasses or single tickets and provides information on museums, ticket prices, and opening hours. It’s useful for planning visits to major sites like Ephesus, Pamukkale, and national museums.
Bu Gece
Bu Gece (Tonight) lists concerts, clubs, and music events across Turkey. It’s focused on live events and electronic music but covers other genres too—useful if you want to find nightlife or buy event tickets locally.

Nöbetçi Eczane
Nöbetçi Eczane shows pharmacies that are open outside regular hours. Many neighborhoods rotate “on duty” pharmacies overnight. The app displays nearby pharmacies, working hours, and opens directions in Google Maps—very useful in emergencies or late-night situations.
Apps We Don’t Recommend
Some apps are unnecessary or underperform compared to their web versions or alternatives. To save phone space, consider skipping the following:
Standalone currency converter apps — Use Google for up-to-date conversions instead of a dedicated app.
Uber — BiTaksi generally offers better coverage and service for taxis in Turkey.
FlixBus app — FlixBus serves Turkey through partnerships, but its website works fine if you don’t already have the app.
Biletix app — The site lists local events, but the app can be glitchy; use the website for a smoother experience.
With these apps installed, you’ll be better equipped to handle daily logistics, discover local culture, and enjoy your time in Turkey with fewer hassles.
