Kadıkalesi & Gümüşlük: Hidden Gems and Coastal Secrets

On the third day of our Bodrum road trip we drove from Turgutreis to Yalıkavak along the coastal roads, allowing us to stop wherever the scenery or small towns caught our eye. Gumusluk was already on our plan, but we only learned about Kadikalesi the night before while chatting to a couple at a restaurant — a reminder of how easy it is in Turkey to end up in conversation with strangers and pick up local tips.

About Kadikalesi and Gumusluk

Both Kadikalesi and Gumusluk are easy to find and feel refreshingly untouched by mass tourism. Within minutes of arriving, it was clear these towns hadn’t been transformed into tourist factories. A quick look at major tour operators’ sites confirms this: you won’t see these spots heavily promoted.

If you travel expecting full English breakfasts and nightly karaoke, these towns aren’t for you. Stick to central Bodrum or Gumbet for a loud tourist scene and familiar comforts. But if you want a place that shows a more genuine coastal side of Turkey, Kadikalesi and Gumusluk are excellent choices.

By “two faces” I mean the contrast you often find in tourist towns: the carefully staged, idyllic image shown to visitors, and the everyday reality lived by residents. In many busy resorts, the tourist face is all sunshine and simple pleasures, with none of the messy parts of life on display.

The other, truer face is what you discover when you spend time in a place: people with ordinary concerns, local politics, arguments between neighbors, and the everyday rhythms of life. Gumusluk and Kadikalesi show that authentic side rather than a polished postcard version of paradise.

Visiting in the quieter season, we encountered very few people; cats and dogs were more likely to pose for a photo than any human. Still, in summer these bays do attract more Turkish visitors, so the atmosphere varies with the season.

Kadikalesi and Gumusluk are ideal for anyone looking to recharge, find inspiration, or take a slower pace to reflect. These resorts haven’t been absorbed into the high-volume, quick-turnover tourist industry, and for many travelers that quietly preserved character is a major part of the appeal.

How to Get to Kadikalesi and Gumusluk

Both resorts lie between Turgutreis and Yalıkavak. Small minibuses (dolmuş) run from either Turgutreis or Yalıkavak and will reach them in about twenty minutes. If you drive, follow the coastal road and watch for signs; the route is scenic and straightforward. Accommodation within the two villages themselves is limited, but you can easily visit them on a day trip from Turgutreis or Yalıkavak, where hotel options are more plentiful.
