Esentepe Panoramic Viewpoint: How to Visit & What to See

The Panoramic Viewpoint at Esentepe, near Göreme, feels to me like an overly commercialized tourist stop. Many tour operators include it on their Cappadocia itineraries as a convenient toilet and refreshment break with the promise of a beautiful landscape view. While it does offer that view, the site is also crowded with souvenir stalls that give it a distinctly touristic atmosphere.

Situated between the small towns of Uçhisar and Göreme, the viewpoint is lined with a dozen or so shops selling nearly identical souvenirs. Each stall presents the same items with slightly different packaging or displays, giving the impression of repetition rather than variety. To be fair, most vendors are polite and not overly pushy; once they realize you are not in the mood to buy, conversations often turn to local topics, the history of Cappadocia, or the landscape itself.

Returning to Panoramic Viewpoint

This was my third visit to the Panoramic Viewpoint, and I remain bemused by the range of souvenirs for sale. Much of it looks like inexpensive trinkets that may never be used again, but the continued presence of these stalls shows there is a steady market for them. Despite that, the viewpoint itself remains a rewarding place to visit.

Overlooking the quaint town of Göreme and the winding Pigeon Valley, Esentepe offers one of the most memorable panoramas in Cappadocia. Even with the commercial elements around it, the setting and the view keep drawing me back. The landscape—rock formations, valleys, and distant towns—creates a scene that feels uniquely Cappadocian.

Trees at the viewpoint are often decorated with small lanterns and strings of nazar boncuğu (evil eye) charms. Nearby stands serve simple, affordable snacks and drinks, which makes the spot convenient for groups and day-trippers. After the large tourist coaches leave, the atmosphere becomes quiet and almost surreal—an ideal time to linger and take in the surroundings.

On a clear day you can even see Mount Erciyes rising in the distance, adding depth to the already dramatic panorama. For me, the combination of sweeping views, the rhythm of visitors coming and going, and the peaceful moments between tour departures make Esentepe Viewpoint one of my favorite spots in Cappadocia.
